Trip to St. Simeon Monastery
Trip to St. Simeon Monastery
We will pick you up in the mroning directly from the entrance door of your hotel in Aswan; you will recognize our driver by a sign with your name in his hand.
He will take you to the remains of St. Simeon’s Monastery, dedicated to the local saint Anba Simaa, had originally been named after the hermit Anba Hatre. It is considered as one of the best preserved old Coptic monasteries in Egypt, located on a hill in the desert near the River Nile. Its construction started in 571 AD, and its formerly three floors once offered space to accommodate around 300 monks and hundreds of pilgrims which means that it was one of the largest Coptic monasteries of its time. The monastery was built on two rock terraces. It was abandoned in 1321 after an Islamic attack which led to a serious construction and the death and banishment of numerous monks. You can see remains of ancient frescos, a basilica dating back to the 9th century AD, the partly preserved main building and several grottos carved out of the rock.
And our driver will bring you back to your hotel in Aswan.
