2 Day Cairo by bus
Hanging Church – We will pick you up directly from the entrance door of your hotel in Marsa Alam; you will recognize our driver by a sign with your name in his hand. You will be transferred in an air-conditioned vehicle to Cairo.
First of all you will visit Giza. Your guide will tell you to the history of the Pyramids which served as the tombs of the ancient Pharaohs Cheops, Chephren, Mykerinus. You will have time to enter one of the Pyramids (additional cost). Also you will find yourself standing at the feet of the enigmatic Sphinx. It is the largest monolith statue in the world. The Great Sphinx is a national symbol of Egypt. It has the body of a lion and the face of a man, probably an ancient king. The age of the Sphinx is not known, with guesses varying between six-thousand and even thirteen-thousand years old. Also in Giza you may visit the Solar Boat Museum (optional), home to the remarkably well preserved boat of the pharaoh Cheops in which he wanted to sail through the underworld. After this visit you will have lunch in a local restaurant.
Cairo‘s famous Egyptian Museum, your next stop, houses more than 120,000 ancient Egyptian artifacts, and the priceless treasures of King Tutankhamen are its highlight, a unique collection of treasures, gold and jewelry which was enclosed in his tomb for over 3.500 years before its discovery in the 1920s when his tomb was excavated. His six gilded coffins dominate the main hall, while his magnificent death mask is the star attraction.
Now you will enjoy a walk on the famous Khan el Khalili bazaar – stroll through the maze of streets and bargain for a souvenir of your trip. The souk dates back to 1382 (if there’s enough time), one of the most famous and oldest bazaars in the Middle East. You will also have the chance to visit a Papyrus Institute to see how the famous artwork is made.
You will have dinner in a hotel in Cairo where you will also spend the night. If you like, book additionally the Pyramids Sound and Light Show in Giza.
After your breakfast in the hotel we will take you to your excursion to the Salah El Din Citadel, a great fortress which had originally been founded by the legendary Sultan Salah El Din (known in Europe as Saladin). It contains also the Alabaster Mosque of Mohamed Ali which was designed by the architect Yousif Boushnaq, a Turkish man who came especially from Istanbul to build this great mosque for Mohamed Ali who ruled Egypt for over 45 years (1805-1849).
You will then continue your trip in Sakkara, the very rich necropolis of Memphis, Egypt’s ancient capital, located in a large open desert area. Visit the world’s first monumental stone building, the Step Pyramid of King Djoser, the oldest pyramid in Egypt, built by the great engineer Imhotep in the 3rd Dynasty (around 2630 BC). Moreover; you will see one of the magnificent mastabas (flat-roofed tombs) of either Ptah Hotep, Idut or Mereruca.
After enjoying lunch in a local restaurant, you will get excited by seeing the most important Coptic sites in Cairo. Move on to Old Cairo where you will discover the Roman fortress, the Hanging Church – (the Church of the Virgin Mary, also called Al Mo’allaka Church, ), built on top of the gate of the Roman fortress. It is possibly the oldest Christian church in Egypt, dating back to the 4th century AD. and the Abu Serga Church, which according to the legend has been built atop one of the sites where the Holy Family rested during their flight from Herod. End your tour by seeing the wonderful collection of the Coptic Museum, founded in 1908 and containing great pieces of Coptic art.
After this visit you will travel back to your hotel in Marsa Alam.
